The Mining and
Petroleum Training Service offers a wide
range of oil spill response training
(OSRT) opportunities. Ideally, OSRT is
developed for the client's particular
operation; land based, marine terminal,
marine environment, tundra, etc., and the
company's spill contingency plan. Many
elements of OSRT are generic and the
following courses address elements of OSRT
in various environments.

|
|
Fundamentals of Oil Spill Response,
4 or 8 Hrs.
|
|
This course is designed
to provide an effective understanding of
oil spill response. It includes fate and
behavior of spills in various
environments, characteristics of crude
petroleum and petroleum products,
weathering of petroleum products, toxicity
and health and safety concerns,
contingency plans, equipment for oil spill
response, deployment and operation of oil
spill recovery equipment, containment
methods, recovery methods, wildlife
protection and disposal of contaminated
materials.

|
Oil Spill
Response for Supervisors, 8 Hrs.
|
|
Designed to assist the
supervisor in understanding contingency
plans, organizing response elements and
teams, conducting spill drills,
notification requirements, record keeping
and reporting, spill recovery and
containment equipment options. This
assumes a basic knowledge of hydrocarbons
and hydrocarbon properties.
|
|
|
Oil Spill
Containment and Recovery, 4 or 6 Hrs.
|
|
A hands-on course
designed to train personnel in the
containment and recovery of small to
medium spills with available materials and
equipment. Students contain and recover
spills in still and moving water and on
land using various booms, dikes, and
ditches. Students construct culvert dams,
deploy containment and diversion booms,
and deploy and operate small weir type and
rope mop skimmers. Students should have
basic knowledge of hydrocarbons and
hydrocarbon properties.

|
|
Oil Spill
Response Technology, 40 Hrs.
|
|
Designed for those who
supervise oil spill response operations or
have a need for more and in-depth
training. The course is taught by
instructors with extensive experience in
the field, both in Alaska and nationally
as well as internationally. Includes the
theoretical basis for oil spill behavior
and response, instruction in spill
potential evaluation and prevention
techniques, logistics, crewing
requirements for various operations, boat
handling, and discussion of the
effectiveness of various tactics and
equipment in a variety of situations. The
instructor's personal experiences are used
to illustrate various situations and
potential problems.

|
|
Marine Oil
Spill Response, 40 Hrs.
|
|
Devoted exclusively to
spill response in a marine environment
including shorelines. The instruction
assumes some background or knowledge of
basic oil spill response tactics as well
as the basics of hydrocarbon behavior in a
marine environment. Topics include:
contingency planning, logistics, tide and
current movement, wind movement, wave
energy, weather, identification of
critical habitats, wildlife protection,
spill containment, boat handling, health
and safety, recovery equipment and
tactics, shoreline protection and
recovery, laws and regulations, crew
requirements and training, identification
of resources, pre-planning and
documentation, notification and record
keeping. Students must provide foul
weather gear, adequate footwear and Class
II personal flotation devices unless
otherwise instructed.
|
|
|
Oil Spill
Response in an Ice Environment, 8 Hrs.
|
|
This class assumes an
adequate background in spill response in
other environments. It presents an
overview of the existing body of knowledge
in spill response for fast and broken ice
environments. Results of research in the
field are discussed in light of the
current technology available for
containment and recovery.
|
|
|
Oil Spill
Response to Land-Based Spills, 16 Hrs.
|
|
Devoted exclusively to
spill response to land-based spills of
petroleum products. The behavior of spills
on land, their effects on vegetation and
soils, as well as the movement of
petroleum products in dry, wet, and frozen
grounds is discussed. Containment and
recovery tactics, disposal and mitigation
of contaminated products, and protection
of groundwater are also discussed.
